Regardless of who was at fault, when a breakup happens, it causes feelings of rejection, sadness, and failure. These feelings of rejection and failure can many times cause low self esteem.

Self esteem is defined as our own perception and personal view of how we see ourselves. Low self esteem occurs when the vision that we have of ourselves is damaged by our perceived failures and lack of support. This lack of self confidence is quite common after a separation.

When low self esteem forms, it affects all aspects of your life, especially your relationships with other people. You should be careful not to isolate yourself from others who may be able to help you. People with low self esteem tend to avoid social situations and then loneliness can become a factor.

The first step to improving your self esteem is to control the way you talk to yourself. Negative self talk is the primary cause for continued low self esteem.

Here are a few tips to help improve your self esteem:

Make sure you treat yourself with kindness. Don’t put yourself down. Look inside yourself for the good instead of the bad. Accept yourself for who you are. Talk to yourself as you would talk to your best friend.

Surround yourself with positive and happy people. It is also very important to be around people, such as family and friends, who support you and lift you up. Avoid being around negative people.

Start to participate in the activities that you enjoy. Many times people with low self esteem quit doing the things they love to do. When you get involved in your favorite hobbies and activities again, it will boost your low self esteem.

The solution for how to overcome low self esteem after a separation is to start taking corrective action immediately. Don’t think that your low self esteem will go away on it’s own – it won’t.

You must change the way you think about yourself. Your negative thoughts of yourself must be changed to positive thoughts.
